If you visit Wells at any time of year, there will always be something going on.
Although classified as a city, Wells very much has a village feel and is bursting with community spirit, as well as being home to world class venues, meaning our what’s on diary is always jam packed!
The Wells Farmers’ Market won a “Taste of the West” Gold Award in 2016 and was also judged the best South West Farmers’ Market! Taking place every Saturday and Wednesday throughout the year (excluding the first Saturday in May, when the Charter Fair is held instead), it is a favourite event for locals, visitors and coach groups and tours as part of their itinerary.
Wells Cathedral hosts an annual calendar of events which doesn’t just include religious services. They hold many free family events and craft workshops throughout the school holidays, events which include their popular Carol Services and traditional Crib service. The Bishop’s Palace host an annual summer Garden Festival, Artisan Winter Market, and also great events for kids and adults throughout the year too.
The Wells Food Festival takes place in early October which involves local businesses, producers, schools and community groups, giving visitors to Wells an opportunity to meet the locals as well as take home some fantastic produce. Also in October is the annual Wells Festival of Literature, which takes place over nine days, and includes competitions, and promotes the love of written and spoken word in various forms at various venues across the city.
Somerset itself is famous for its carnival circuit, of which Wells is a part of. Every November over 100 illuminated floats pass through the city, in a spectacle admired by thousands of visitors each year, so book your accommodation early if you are planning to visit us for this one!
Wells is also not far from The Royal Bath & West Showground, home to the popular Bath & West Agricultural Show, and various fayres and exhibitions throughout the year.
